It started out as a Halloween shopping mission with my children but somehow for me it segued into a Walmart fashion spree! I gleaned the print skirt and oversized knit, above, along with more winter-ready additions like this adorable ski-spirited zip-up knit,  this throw-on-and-go dress, this belted fringed cardigan, and this sherpa-lined bomber. Check out this edit of goodies here! This post is sponsored by Walmart.

ciao ciao

marlien rentmeester

For a few minutes there yesterday, I felt like I was in a sun-soaked Umbrian piazza, ciao-ciao-ing with some spirited locals, awaiting my creamy Cacio e Peppe--all because of my Euro-chic vintage-looking paisley tunic. The reality: I was sitting in an alleyway, off Canon Drive in Beverly Hills, about to eat a chopped salad. But, honestly, that is the transporting power of my new beloved Zimmermann top, which looks as if I had snapped it up in Ibiza or Capri! I actually bought it from Farfetch--A.K.A. the endlessly stylish rabbit hole lined with the most-coveted and hard-to-find pieces curated from under-the-radar boutiques all over the world (yes, like Ibiza and Capri). To prove my point and then some: take a look at thisthis, this and this! Enjoy the rabbit-hole run and, better yet, use my bespoke 10% off code MARLIEN10 while you're at it. You're welcome! (T&C's apply!)

the shearling jacket

Chic Parisians like Anne-Laure Mais, above, and Leia Szef, below, are fending off fall's first chill with a shearling jacket (in Sandro and Ralph Lauren respectively), and I'm inclined to follow suit! My dream would be this one by Isabel Marant, but I could also be happy and warm in a style slightly less pricey, such as these from MotherStand Studio, Bernardo NY, and H&M.

love the label

There's so much to love about newly-discovered Love the Label, starting with its bohemian-chic Ulla Johnson-meets-Sea New York vibe. Perhaps most compelling is its refreshingly affordable price point. Everything comes in under $300. My favorites include the puff-sleeve batik print dress, above, year-round wearable with sandals or knee-high boots, along the floral jumpsuit below (layer it over a black turtleneck to autumn-proof it), and the vibrant balloon-sleeve blouse, below. Check out so many more cute pieces here!

hard core

Whenever my twin sister shoots Gwyneth Paltrow, she makes an extra effort to dress up, even it's  just throwing on a tailored blazer over a sweater or a pair of Chanel flats instead of Converse high-tops. Her approach has been historically successful (GP would concur) until earlier this month, when the last shoot had her working in a no-shoes-allowed house--and, unfortunately, in old mismatched socks. D'oh! In short, she was mortified. But I think she compensated for it--and then some--by executing these beautiful pics, featuring G. Label's latest Core Collection, replete with pieces that will look like she made an effort to dress up! Next time!

scarfing

I'm seeing the matching scarf-and-sweater styling combo everywhere (including Banana Republic, above, and below), and I want to pile it on, too! Ganni makes it easy for me, with its all-in-one cable knit sweater, along with The Frankie Shop, Le 17 Septembre, H&M, Zara, and Brochu Walker.

leather weather

Leia sfez

So when did "bomb cyclone" become part of Southern California's vernacular? Can't we just call it, like, leather weather instead? It sounds a lot less ominous! Besides, this season's newly wide-legged leather trousers are all I want to wear when the mercury (or as today's case may barometric pressure) dips here. I love Loulou Studio's ankle-grazing pair, above, because I can wear them with sneakers, loafers or boots, and they can be dressed up or down. These vegan leather options by The Reformation and Nanushka are also amazing, along with these up-cycled pairs by AGOLDE and Deadwood.

sweet carolyn

I may look happy below but, to be perfectly honest, it's not all that fun posing next to Carolyn Murphy for a picture! She's ridiculously beautiful! Actually, she's more radiant in real life than on all the magazine covers and runways you've seen her on. And, yes, on the inside too! An environmental advocate, painter, sculptor, avid surfer and friend, Carolyn just launched her first capsule collection for Mother on Net-A-Porter today. All the thoughtfully designed pieces--denim jackets, patchwork jeans, a cotton-poplin blouse, track pants--are responsibly made and amazingly imbued with a modern Americana style. My favorite: the army jacket, above, with a detachable hoodie and cuffs! Perfect for hanging out together in Malibu. Check out the collection here!

bootie call

A friend whom I've not seen for weeks came over the other night for dinner, and before even saying hello to me, she complimented my new boots. And my body, because of my boots! My legs look longer, she said, and my butt looks lifted. Naturally, these Loeffler Randall boots are now glued to my feet! I scored them on Tuckernuck (more sizes here and here) along with this statement leather top, and this cute bell-sleeved cardigan.

close in

Dutch artist Anouk Yve is majorly fostering my obsession with German denim label Closed Official. (Which, BTW, is currently taking Europe by storm!) Not only do I love its signature flattering jeans (particularly this one and this one!), but I'm also all into the denim-elevating counterparts such the roll-neck jumper and cashmere scarf, above, and contrasting cuff jacket, below, along with this sleek belted blazer (to wear over everything!), these cuffed trousers, this knit skirt (last pic), this cozy turtleneck, and these high-waist wide-leg jeans. Check out the new season collection here!

mango and more

Whoever is styling Mango's fall campaign is seriously convincing me I need nothing more in my closet than its current hero pieces. (No, this is not a sponsored post!) Everyday effortlessness and uncontrived cool anchor all of these looks here--exactly what I strive for in my routine dressing. The mainstays: a statement coat, above, with cuffed jeans, tailored blazers, straight-cut full-length jeans (for $59!), polished loafers, stripes, stripes and more stripes. I'd supplement with some more flawlessly chic musts from Simone Rocha, Tory Burch, AGOLDE and Aeyde

pre-ski prep

During this morning's school run, the car thermometer bottomed out at 49 degrees. "When are we going skiing?" my youngest son asked. Good question! Even though I don't quite know the answer quite yet, I did just find out where I can suit up for the slopes this season in style--and for way less. At The Outnet, all kinds of technical (yet cute!) gear is half off including this Perfect Moment base layer, these super flattering Fulsap bootcut ski pants,  and this Perfect Moment retro-print sweater. Free People also has some great statement-making options including the quilted waterproof ski bib, pictured, these bold-print ski pants, this vintage ski sweatshirt and this zip-up fair isle base layer top.

my moda

Last summer I curated a "mini shop" on Modatrova that was a big hit, so I decided to give it another whirl for fall--and I am pretty certain you'll appreciate my efforts! You'll find a tight edit of standout yet everyday wearable clothes by under-the-radar designers at excellent prices. (Read: my favorite kind of shopping!) Highlights include Sold Out NYC's wide leg pants, above, and  white tank, below, this Christy Lynn high-neck cardigan, these gorgeous stackable Heritage New York rings, and these Alepel monogrammed slides. Check out all my selects here!

a family affair

My family flew in from all over (Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Princeton, and Dominican Republic) to celebrate my birthday in New York City over the weekend--and we definitely made the most of it. We dined at Cervos, The Odeon, L'Avenue, Los Tacos #1, La Mercerie, Double Zero, Sadelle's and Bar Pitti (of course). When we weren't eating, we checked out The Whitney, played ping pong, biked up the West Side Highway, ran along the East River, and even watched an epic movie (Stillwater). Today I am excited to participate in another enjoyable family affair, this time with Net-A-Porter's Friends and Family Sale, featuring 25% off the most desirable fall styles, including the vegan leather Nanushka skirt, above, this impeccably sleek Veronica Beard blazer, this LVIR faux leather jumpsuit, and this Stand Studio quilted coat. Shop the sale here!

birthday catch-up

Yesterday my friend Abigail threw a birthday lunch for my sister and me at her beautiful home in Greenwich Village. It provided an opportunity for us to celebrate another turn around the sun and toast (in Swedish, thanks to Lucia) to our enduring friendships. Our catch-up chitchat also yielded some much-appreciated, trustworthy intel, such as the eye-opening lash-lengthening powers of Thrive Cosmetics' mascara (and its new tubing technology), the game-changing skin-enhancing benefits of Sakara's Chlorophyll Drops, the miracle-working hair-thickening Harlinikken scalp treatment, the compact cuteness of this Boyy bag, the flattering nature of Veronica Beard's bootcut jeans, the Aspen-chicness of this fringed Zara turtleneck, and finally the greatness that is this Mayle (my namesake!) dress . Happy Weekend!

How cool is this hoodie-meets-fair isle knit situation? Perfect to throw over everything!

last hurrah

P.S. It's the last day of Shopbop's Style Event--i.e., your last chance to save on this season's most desirable styles, including statement knits by Scotch & Soda, above, and BB Dakota, below, along with these gems by Ulla JohnsonRachel Comey, Levi'sTach, and Vasic. Check it all out here!

cos wool cape

Trying to steal my twin sis's new oversized cashmere Cos sweater and getting caught (dang!) indirectly led me to discover this cool wool cape (for $135!). When I went online to buy my own sweater, I stumbled across this cover-up, imbued with a very chic yet slightly avant grade vibe. Kind of Hermes meets Gabriella Hearst. I'm going to throw it over turtlenecks and long-sleeve t-shirts--and said sweater.

shop on

This week is off to an auspicious start, thanks to Shopbop's Style Event, featuring fall's newest, most coveted jeans (from Mother's straight leg crop, above, to the long and leggy, below) plus all of my favorite winter-ready pieces up to 25% off! My top five: this sleek and super versatile Theory coat, this Free People knit tunic, this Phillip Lim coat, these wear-with-everything Vince boots, and this fringed Mother cardigan. Head here to shop it all!

jump to it

Mango's jumpsuit situation is not only compelling but convincing me I need to wear nothing else this fall! The one-and-done outfit could not be easier to throw on--and yet it looks totally pulled together. I especially love the belted denim one, above, and the sharp-looking suit-inspired version, below.

big time

Big blazers are back again this fall, but this time around they are less structured and more   borrowed-from-the-boys loose-fitting. In Paris this week, these jackets are being paired with everything from casual jeans to trousers to edgy statement dresses. The best options to consider come from TotemeDeadwoodVeronica Beard, Frame, Zara and Mango.

Minnie and Emma vintage cassette shadow box

Despite all the trips around the sun my twin sister and I have made together, I've always found it difficult to find her the right birthday present every year! But not this one! Thank you, Minnie and Emma, for this cute vintage cassette shadow box--a little piece of art with major impact. (It even comes with D-rings for hanging!) Perfect for her new NYC apartment! The only challenge is deciding on the musical artist. The Grateful Dead? The Cure? Beastie Boys? All epic!

lisa lisa

Lisa Aiken style

Lisa Aiken's multi-city fashion show tour is solidifying her own style-star stage presence. The other day in Paris, the Neiman Marcus fashion director spectacularly teamed a sexy peekaboo Victoria Beckham turtleneck with baggy trousers. (Note: she cleverly tucked the knit into her pants to minimize the cut-out.) Next, she paired an A.W.A.K.E. Mode asymmetrical top and pleated skirt to dramatic effect! Other standouts in her repertoire: these Frankie Shop shorts (which she topped with a Jacquemus blazer), Bottega Veneta mesh sandals (above), and Christopher Esber statement knits.

above the knee

Though Paris' fashionistas will abide by Brasserie Lipp's long-standing "no salads as a meal" rule, they definitively play by their own style rules, and right now it's all about an unexpectedly short, above-the-knee hemline. It's not a typical fall silhouette, which is exactly why it looks so utterly fresh and cool. I want some of what they're having in these styles by See By Chloe, Alice & Olivia, Veronica BeardGanniWardrobe NYC, and Zara
