shopbop shop
Tuesday, November 25There's not even a whiff of turkey at my house--and yet the Thanksgiving sales have begun. Most notably at Shopbop. (Spend $250, save 15%, spend $500, save $20% and spend $1000 and save 25%.) For me, the timing couldn't be better, as it's easier to contemplate shimmying into a new (much-needed!) party dress, specifically the gorgeous Josh Goot cut-out dress, above, minus the mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie in my stomach. (P.S. A friend of mine wore this dress in black to a party a few weeks ago, so I am already quite familiar with its splendor!) Other dresses perfect for holiday feting include this glinty Parker sequin shift, this feather-trimmed Nanette Lepore and this lace Saylor dress. Also on my list: this super cute cropped Tibi sweater, these Vince loafers, this delicate Jacquie Aiche ring (which would also make for a nice stocking stuffer!), this moto-inspired JBrand jacket, and this warm weather vacation-ready PilyQ dress.
zipped in
If you, like me, missed out on Phillip Lim's amazing zip-up sweater last winter (pictured above and below), you might want to consider J.Crew's just-out version, which comes in heather grey and navy--and is 30% off right now.

shirt tale
Monday, November 24Whenever my fashion photographer twin travels to a glamorous locale for a shoot, I always ask her to bring me something back. After returning from Mallorca, Spain, a few days ago (which happened to be her wedding venue 12 years ago!), she came home with what could be the most valuable thing yet: a tip on where to buy the most perfectly fitting white button-down shirt. Everyone on the shoot, she explained, had the same one, including the uber force-behind-many-fashion-zeitgeists stylist on the job. The cotton shirt, she went on, is lightweight, easy to layer, and also just the right amount of loose-fitting to make it utterly flattering. You can find it here.

Thursday, November 20For Throw Back Thursday/Flashback Friday, I thought I'd share a picture of some friends (Sarah Meikle, fashion director at Conde Nast Traveler, in the middle, and clothing designer Beth Blake Dey, on the right) and me taken last summer, boating off the coast of Shelter Island, New York, windswept at wine o'clock! I am wearing a beaded (very Marni-esque) H&M jacket, which I bought last June and to this day wear like crazy. I truly love it! Turns out it's now again available on H&M's website. Don't ask why, just get it before it goes! I like to team it with tops like this Petit Bateau striped tee, this Suno ethnic-y embroidered blouse (or this one) and this basic black J.Crew sweater (30% off).
boot up
Wednesday, November 19If you haven't already nailed your boot situation this winter, today would be a good day to do it as Shopbop is offering 25% off the season's best styles. My favorites include this pointy-toe, low-heeled, infinitely versatile Vince (I also love the high-heeled version), this suede Ulla Johnson bootie, this over-the-knee Sigerson Morrison, this stack-heeled suede Rag & Bone, this Derek Lam 10 Crosby lace-up, this knee-high Joie, and this navy Steven ankle boot. The sale lasts today only. To get the discount, use the code here!

What is
it about French Vogue editor Emmanuelle Alt's tendency to belt
everything that is so appealing? Whittled-down waist? Longer legs?
Thrown together yet put together? Sexy and
stylish (with a little Gallic je-sais-quoi thrown in)? Tie-me-up bondage? If you are reading this and are a professor of
semiotics, please comment below with the answer. In the meantime, I will
just keep drawing inspiration from it during my shopping travels. My
latest related find? These J.Crew cardigans that come with a belt (effectively taking out the what-belt-to-wear guesswork) and in just about every color (and 30% off!).

the teddy coat
Monday, November 17An East Coast-based friend of mine left me a voice mail message over the weekend, lamenting winter's sudden ice cold arrival. The plummeting mercury, she said, warranted her Canada Goose parka--A.K.A, the fashion crowd's effectively cool yet warm--and, yes, slightly reluctant--answer to the polar vortex. I'd like to offer her (and others facing the deep freeze) some comfort in the form of a teddy coat. Because it's as snuggly, soft, cozy, cocooning and warm as it sounds. And it looks (unreluctantly) chic! Check out these sub-zero-friendly styles from Warehouse, Free People, Antik Batik, Sonia Rykiel, and Whistles. The coat pictured, below, is by Ganni, and the one, above, is last season Max Mara.

backpacking
Friday, November 14Coincidence or not, I've had a few friends email me this past week, requesting a post on backpacks. It's been a while since I've written about them, and since these bottomless-seeming, physiologically-friendly and now stylishly practical bags are here to stay, I thought I'd share my current crop of favorites, all of which, coincidence or not, double as a handbag so you don't have to sling it on your shoulders (because, I'm sorry, sometimes you just don't want to!). I love Jerome Dreyfuss' luxe python and leather backpack, particularly its anonymous, where-did-you-get-that look. I also adore Proenza Schouler's minimally-sleek bag-meets-backpack (it's almost like you're buying two bags in one!). In the same vein, the Balenciaga Le Dix backpack, with a top handle and beautiful brushed hardware, is more compact but gorgeously, stunningly elegant. I'm also totally into this sporty-chic drawstring Deux Lux, and its $80 price cannot be beat! There's something very fashion-insidery-cool about toting a Mansur Gavriel (that is if you can get your hands on one!). And last but not least, you cannot go wrong with this forever chic Elizabeth and James, straightforward in its design, small in size but yet still big enough!

gorgeous gio
Thursday, November 13There's a whole lot of jet-set glam packed into this Instagram pic of stylist Giovanna Battaglia, taken this past summer off the coast of Ibiza, while holding what else but a package of Swedish Kalles Caviar. What I'm fixated on though is her striking print blouse, casually buttoned (just once, mind you) over a bikini. It's the chicest yet easiest alternative to a traditional cover-up that I've seen yet! Truth is, I could even wear this kind of shirt now, completely buttoned, of course. The ticket to paradise is in the vintage-y, vibrant print, which festoon these possibilities from Miu Miu, Ken Scott, Anthropologie, Stella McCartney, and Tory Burch.

the turtleneck hair tuck
Wednesday, November 12I am all about beauty tricks that are easy to pull off, and the turtleneck hair tuck is one of those things that looks as good as it feels. (It also nails that effortless chic vibe that's often annoying elusive!) All that is required is a great, cozy knit, like these lovelies from J.Crew (25% off, I also love this one!), Theory (more sizes here), Everlane, Equipment, and Velvet.

A friend invited me to a holiday trunk show with an invitation that read "this is the time of the year when we should be thinking about ourselves" (since the perpetual giving-to-others time steps up a notch in the weeks ahead:) Okay then, I'll take a pair of these earrings for myself--and since the price is nice, buy another as a gift!

the cropped biker jacket
Tuesday, November 11I thought I was all ready to go out on Saturday night. I had selected the cocktail (vintage, almost-to-the-floor lace) dress a few weeks ago. I had my makeup done, hair pulled back and up, kids fed, iPhone and credit card in my clutch, Uber idling outside. But then as I was turning out the light in my closet, it occurred to me that I might be cold later and should take a cover-up--something cropped, fitted, slightly tough and edgy to temper my dress' frothy, feminine vibe. I must have tried on a dozen things, ranging from a creamy satin tuxedo blazer to a gold metallic cardigan. Nothing worked. What was in order was a cropped (keyword here!) leather biker jacket, one that doesn't have a million zippers, lots of shiny heavy hardware and crazy quilting, but rather, one that is sleek, supple, butter-soft and goes with everything. Something I don't have! So, yes, the search is now on, and since I know that this cropped biker will become a long-term wardrobe staple, I am up for paying the price. My faves so far include this T by Alexander Wang, this Rag & Bone (small sizes here at 40% off!), this French Connection, this Whistles, this BLK DNM, and this Balenciaga.

flat out love
Monday, November 10A Saturday night charity gala followed by a Sunday baby shower brunch meant hours and hours of high-heeling--and foot assaulting. And so, the moment I exited the door at shower-end yesterday, I unstrapped my stilettos and shuffled barefoot down the street toward my car. I must have looked quite discombobulated, for as a car approached, slowed down and then rolled past I looked up to see a couple (it happened to be Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell) staring at me from within, with looks of grave concern on their faces. On the ride home, I naturally started thinking about flats, and how, when selected and styled just right, offer quite a bit of elegance minus all the torture. I'd like to take a cue from London-based stylist Caroline Issa, who stylishly flits from around in easy-to-walk-in yet dramatically elegant lcae-up flats. (Hers are by Christian Louboutin.) Some other lacy statements include this pretty ankle-wrap flat and this suede shoe, both from Aquazurra, this leopard print Gianvito Rossi, this Free People and this Jeffrey Campbell.

the tuxedo blazer
Friday, November 7I helped a friend clean out her (well-stocked) closet the other day and noticed only one but major hole in her wardrobe: no tuxedo jacket. Pity, I thought, as this classic piece is endlessly employable, whether layered over a cocktail dress or a basic t-shirt. For this reason, I own several--some cropped and fitted, others slightly oversized and long--by designers ranging from Alexander McQueen to H&M. So, I promised my friend I'd dig up the season's best iterations, which include this slightly loose-fitting Isabel Marant (which I own and swear by as it's great with both jeans and dresses!), this Michael Kors (similar vibe, less expensive), this elegantly cropped silk Stella McCartney (65% off!), this hip-grazing Alice + Olivia, this feminine MiH Jeans, this white shawl-collar J.Crew, and this cropped sequin-trimmed H&M (which I just added to my collection!).

gold rush
Thursday, November 6As I indulged in a rare late morning brunch the other day at Republique (home to the fluffiest, tastiest French Toast ever), some friends and I chatted about one of the things I love most: vintage shopping. I shared my beloved past-era clothing sources in LA (such as Sielian's and Shareen, where I recently struck gold with several amazing dresses) as well as my new secret online spot for vintage jewelry, Chairish, which officially launches the category today. Chairish, as you may know, is an amazing home decor site, but now it features vintage jewelry and accessories. Lucky me, I was given a preview of the offerings a few weeks ago when they asked me if I would curate my favorites from the collection. I was happy to oblige(!), as there are numerous resplendently chic yet reasonably priced pieces, including these Chanel earrings from the '80s, pictured above, this Victorian braided coil bracelet, this chic mariner link chain necklace, this edgy crystal spike bracelet, this hammered metal and lucite cuff, this tassel necklace, this mid-century Pal Kepenyes ring, this Kenneth Lane faux tusk necklace, this 1940s unsigned Hattie Carnagie rhinestone necklace and this statement-making interlinked chain and pearl Kenneth Jay Lane necklace. You can see all of my selects here!

the skinny scarf
Wednesday, November 5Before the weather calls for wrapping up in chunky, chill-defying wool scarves, I'm wanting to give the silk skinny scarf a whirl. Prada's coveted version, above and below, has a fun and slinky '70s vibe, which, of course, is one of fall's definitive trends. It looks best casually tied and draped around the neck, finishing off a streamlined, straightforward outfit (team it with a basic top and tailored blazer, or an oversize V-neck sweater, or a sleek dress). Other scarves that will do the trick include this fringed J.Crew (25% off), this Saint Laurent, this Club Monaco and this Tory Burch (fold it and wrap it around your neck like in the last image below). P.S. Check out this link to learn even more ways to style the skinny scarf.
