In walked my friend to pick me up for dinner at Scopa in Venice the other night, wearing a creamy white organza shift dress by Topshop. Her tanned limbs practically glowed, and with her hair up in a loose ponytail, she personified summer's lustrous ease. Of course, short little dresses go hand in hand with summer like long beach days and rose wine. I am enamored with them as they easily go from day to night, stand up to the grimiest heat waves and, with either flats or heels, look impeccably chic. Other small, summery miracles include this fringed Alexander Wang (pictured below, also available here), this DKNY, this Rag & Bone (similar to above), this Lover, this Club Monaco, this Mango, and this Alice & Olivia.

high tee
Friday, June 27A white t-shirt is one of my year-round wardrobe staples, but I really put them to work during the summer. To anchor statement skirts and print shorts. To temper a sequin skirt or patterned pants. To stay cool without compromising style. The pic, above, makes me want to wear a white tee even more frequently--and, of course, seek out better, chicer options than I currently have. As we all know finding the right t-shirt is no simple task, as nailing all the details--fit, fabric, sleeve length--can be complex. Still, I think I've already hit upon some ideal ones from Current/Elliot, Rag & Bone, Toteme, Acne Studios, and Free People.

manning milan
It's men's fashion week in Milan, and for the female attendees, it appears to be all about embracing their inner tomboys--and wearing sneakers with just about everything. Of course, sneakers have been in vogue for a while now, but the new and emerging trend is that now they're being teamed with more fancy, feminine finery, specifically dresses and skirts, as demonstrated in these images. Only certain sneakers can pull off this look (i.e., don't try this with your everyday running kicks!), and they are of the slip-on or streamlined, old-school variety, such as these guys by Vince (similar to one directly below), Common Projects, Adidas (as pictured above), Saint Laurent, and Vans.

long skirts
Tuesday, June 24Introducing the new linchpin to my summer uniform: a long, breezy skirt. (I own the white one by Zara pictured below, as do several of my friends, both petite and tall. Alas, it's now sold out!) What's most appealing about this silhouette is its wear-anywhere ability. It can be dressed up or down--i.e., with sky-high heels or simple sandals; either way, it looks decidedly chic. I also know it will keep me cool on a hot summer day, and it doesn't need major accessories. In fact, the simpler, the better, I think. Some skirts to consider: this jersey flared Nicholas (similar to the white Zara one below), this swishy chiffon Theory, this eyelet Tibi (40% off!), this vibrant Topshop, this linen pocketed Asos, and this Zara (pictured above).

sandal share
Monday, June 23Over the weekend, my twin sister (left) and I (right) reunited with a longtime New York-based friend, who came to visit LA with her family. It's been years since we've all spent more than a few hours together, but even so, it was as if we had just talked (and talked) yesterday. I love those kinds of friendships, where despite the distance, the familiarity remains in tact and you can pick up where you left off without skipping a beat. Such was the case when our catching-up on family and friends stuff soon segued to fashion (of course!) and my friend offered up a recommendation for a chic pair of summer sandals. They look like the Valentino Rockstuds (more here and here), she said, knowing they'd be precisely up my alley. Of course, she was right. And her timing, spot-on, as I have a similar pair of sandals that I love but have frequented the shoe repair shop one too many times. So, in the friendly, sharing-is-caring spirit, you can partake in them here!

sleek summer shorts
Wednesday, June 18The plan last Saturday was for my husband, kids and their cousins to attend a Giants baseball game in San Francisco. Mine was to shop. Yes, store-hopping is one way to familiarize yourself with a new city! The touristy adventure, of course, requires an outfit that is stylish, heat-proof and walking-friendly--one that, in my opinion, should involve a sophisticated pair of shorts. The kind that you team with low-heeled or flat sandals and a crisp blouse, maybe even a blazer (see above), and wow, you're done. Ones that are tailored, flattering and not too short. (P.S. They should also be able to go seamlessly from the city to the seaside!) In other words: perfect all-around shorts. Among my favorites are pairs by J.Crew, Whit (70% off!), Rag & Bone, Joie, Tibi, Kate Spade Saturday, Gucci and Zara.

culottes call
Monday, June 16When I worked at Lucky Magazine, there was a regularly running column called How to Dress Around a. . . (insert a newly trendy, hard-to-wear item here). Accompanying pictures showed how to style the piece, so that ultimately you could pull it off with aplomb (rather than look like a fashion victim). For me, this column was especially convincing whenever I was on the fence about buying edgier pieces. Since I'm now considering a pair of culottes--an item of clothing I haven't worn since I was in the single digits--I spent some time this morning assembling my own version of "How to Dress Around." These images pretty much persuade me that my wearing culottes is 100% doable--and effectively cute. My options so far: this pleated Tibi (similar to above), this silk Whistles, this Kate Spade Saturday, and this textured Topshop.

gladiator good
Thursday, June 12While the fashion tribe may be favoring Birkenstocks (white birks in particular right now!) and slides this summer, I am remaining loyal to my gladiators, keeping them very much in the mix. They're classics, after all, and one can never go wrong with a pair with a few simple, narrow straps in a neutral solid (i.e., black, brown, metallic) with minimal details. Gladiators are also an alluring mate to a flowy dress or short shorts, and they emit summer's laid-back vibe. Some of my favorites this season wind up the leg a little (emphasis on little!), such as these lovelies by Madewell, Sam Edelman, and House of Harlow. Other ones I like have a decidedly feminine edge such as this Tibi and this Ancient Greek Sandal. I also like these classic versions from Jason Wu, Kurt Geiger, Circus and Dolce Vita.
