new york news

During my 36-hour trip to NYC this past week, I squeezed in catch-ups with long-time friends, an East Village shopping spree, a glorious run down the West Side Highway, meals at Bar Pitti, San Ambroeus, Bond Street, and Mercer Kitchen, speaking on a female entrepreneurial panel, and through it all, soaked up loads of fall style inspo. Which I thought I'd share with you! To start with, I saw more western boots on the streets of New York than I have in these western parts, including the eye-catchers, above, by Alexa Chung. I also like these more subtle/versatile takes from Splendid, Dolce Vita, and Tibi. Also desirable and ubiquitous: cozy, oversize sweaters, like this, this and this. Plus, animal prints and plaids were everywhere, including on me! I could use some more from Rachel Comey, Aquazzura, and Baum und Pferdgarten.

heron preston camouflage pants

Although my twin sister lives approximately 8.7 miles away, weeks can elapse between our seeing each other. Work, traffic, kids' schedules, travel, and yada, yada, yada are to blame. Even so, when we do get together, somehow we are always in sync. Our most recent twinning moment occurred during a rare mid-week lunch when, as per usual, we shared our recent shopping notes. I boasted about my new Heron Preston camouflage chinos, above--not too baggy, not too military-ish. She claimed she too had found a pair, but by J.Crew, that she guaranteed were even better. Turns out, we're both right (maybe for once) as hers fits are flattering, fitted with a bit of stretch and feminine.

it knits

long sweater trend

Speaking of beautiful long knits, check out the incredible slit sweater, above, worn by Ukrainian fashion director Julie Pelipas in Paris the other day. It's by Joseph, but I can't seem to find it anywhere, though I did come across these similar lovelies by Elizabeth and James, Stella McCartney, and Free People.

P.S. My mom loved my recent post about this season's sweater layering so I thought I'd share another good scarf/jumper find from Mango, below.

shopbop sale

Long knit dresses are beautifying the boulevards of Paris during Fashion Week right now, and in true Gallic style, they're seductive yet simple. Fortunately for us, we can also sport them back home--and get them along with beaucoup de la chic fashion--on sale at Shopbop! (Spend under $500, get 20% off, spend $500+, get 25% off, get the code here.) The dresses pictured above are by Jacquemus, and the plush balloon-sleeve sweater, below, which I've been craving for weeks, is by Ganni (I snapped it up in yellow). I'd also like to have these Rosie Assoulin-spirited beaded Shashi bracelets (last pic, another fashion week fave!), this Ulla Johnson party dress, these Hermes-inspired Steven sandals, this ruffled Rebecca Taylor blouse, and these perfectly-cut AGOLDE high-waist jeans. Shop the whole shebang here.

the fine print

All the statement-making, eye-catching printastic shirts that punctuated Milan Fashion Week (pictured here) has me hankering for one of my own! I sourced this Fendi logo lookalike (similar to below) from here, and also dug up these graphic head-turners from Chloe (above), La Double J, Saloni,Veronica Beard, Proenza Schouler, and Ulla Johnson.

jacket racket

Last night at 6:30PM was the first time in a long time I wanted to wear a warm jacket. I was standing on the sidelines of my son's flag football game acutely feeling fall's chill through my thin army coat. (News flash: Tomorrow is the first day of autumn.) Now I'm ready to cozy up in this season's "shacket," a combination of a heavy shirt and an oversized jacket. Fashion show attendees in New York and London, pictured below, have convinced me of their inherent versatility and cool edge (and football fan-friendliness). I am considering these guys from Topshop, Alexa Chung, Mango, Isabel Marant (immediately below), and, like the ones, above, Chloe

letter of intent

These days, a chic necklace party isn't complete without the in-demand Celine letter necklace, above. My sis bought hers in mid-August and hasn't take it off since! I like this version from Monica Vinader because it's a little bulky and a lot less expensive.

jumper joy

Forget the coat-thrown-nonchalantly-over-the-shoulders look this fall. (It may not come off so nonchalant anymore?) Instead, try layering up with an extra sweater or chunky scarf--and make it look like it was an afterthought: grabbed from your closet, while running out out the door, thrown on and tied at the neck or around the torso. Lauren Santo Domingo has mastered this layering trick, and to make it easier for us, The Frankie Shop has combined this sweater/scarf combo to expert effect (another option here). You can also pull off this look with these knits from Goen J, White & Warren, and PushButton, and these chunky scarves from Mango, Acne Studios, and Zara. The sweater below is by Joseph.

go wild

If you haven't yet gotten your paws on this season's animal print skirt, don't despair. There are currently loads of great options to choose from, including these by Alice & Olivia (similar to above and below), The Frankie Shop, Topshop, Proenza Schouler (immediately below), and Asos.

white boots

If I had to boil it down to just one must-have for fall, it would no doubt be a pair of white boots. They'll instantly make your old jeans and blazer combo look hot-off-the-press new and cool, and because they're neutral, they go with pretty much every single thing. Done and done. I am way into these versions by Balenciaga (pictured above), Sam Edelman, Dolce Vita, Loeffler Randall, Alexandre Birman, and Vince.

button down 2.0

A classic button-down shirt will always have a special place in my wardrobe, but these NYFW street style pics make me think I need a not-so-classic one, too! A re-invented shirt that shows a little shoulder, or has extra long panels--basically, unexpected details that will crank up my jeans-and-sneaks outfit. Cool tops like this one from Monse (pictured above), Each x Other (below, on sale!), J.Crew, Frame, Club Monaco, and Altuzarra.

shell on

If you haven't yet scored your fashion-insider-must-have shell necklace, I recommend you snap up Shashi's affordable choker, which looks best (and so right this season) layered with lots of gold, like this Anne Sisteron, this Sasha Samuel, and this Adina Reyter.

bragging whites

In case there was any confusion about whether to wear white pants after Labor Day, these hot-off-the-press street style snaps should clear things up. Fashion Week show-goers are lighting up autumn's gloom with lots of cream, from classic jeans to sophisticated high-waisted trousers. The key to this look is accessorizing with textural wintry staples such as boots, cozy sweaters, and cold weather's go-to hue, black. I think white wide-leg trousers are particularly fresh and polished, specifically these iterations from The Reformation (just got these and love!), Helmut Lang, Vince (second picture down), GRLFRND, Raey, Topshop, and Victoria Beckham (similar to above).

outre outerwear

One more thing to add to your fall shopping list: a super duper statement coat. Right now, New York fashion show attendees are emphasizing the bolder, the better (think wild animal prints to mad plaids). The best options in my book come from Etro (above), Ganni (pictured below) or this one, Cupcakes and Cashmere, Storets, Topshop, Baum und Pferdgarten, Scotch & Soda, and Mango.

top of the charts

leandra medine cohen street style

Typically it's the hero skirts, statement tops and technicolor accessories that trigger the camera flashes outside the shows during New York Fashion Week. This time around, it's--surprise, surprise!--the humble t-shirt. Show-goers strutted out their favorite (read: most reliable) wardrobe staples, including Leandra Medine, above and below, who opted for fresh-looking gray and navy versions, while others stuck to traditional whites. The newly resurrected tee is (once again) proving to be the perfect and most comfortable foil to more eye-popping pieces (think: plaid coats, graphic jackets, and vivid knits). I swear by these iterations from Hanes x Karla, Bassike, Acne Studios, Re/Done, and The Reformation.

prints charming

New York City reached 98 degrees yesterday, and eye-popping prints were hot on the streets. Who better to exhibit this blazing trend than ahead-of-the-curve fashion show go-ers, who chose to go loud and proud, with everything from polka dots to plaids to wild florals. From my perspective, a mix of disparate ones looked even better! I'd like to jump on the bandwagon with this spotted Ganni wrap skirt (last pic, below), this Milly striped sweater, this snake-print Topshop skirt, this Stelen plaid wrap, these leopard patterned Miaou jeans, this checked Jakke faux fur jacket, this Asos animal-print midi, this Acne Studios patchwork dress, and this polka dot Rixo London frock.
