case by case

For my trip to Europe last summer I stuffed a weeks' worth of clothes, shoes and bags into a carry-on suitcase only to have it split--true story--in Split, Croatia. My packed-to-the-gills suitcase literally burst open as I was going through airport security. A customs officer kindly helped me tape it together while I sat on top of it. The scene was both hilarious and harrowing! So, I've been in the market for a replacement and just found this incredibly chic leather-trimmed (and well-priced) Mark and Graham that I had monogrammed. Win!

pin point

Lately for me it's been more about pinstripes than my usual Breton stripes. I've found they're equally versatile and hard-working--but yet feel a little fresher. I've already stocked up on a few iterations for spring, including these from Banana Republic, She Inside, and Zara, but would love to add a few more, specifically these from Equipment, Johanna Ortiz, J.Crew, Sonia Rykiel, Gap (also this one) and  Tibi.

la double j

Speaking of fetching spring dresses, I'm completely smitten with La Double J's colorfully printed pieces, one of which I took to Mexico last week (above) and another Cali-cool beauty, below! They're designed by my LA-bred, Milan-based friend JJ Martin, who also writes for publications like Wallpaper, Harper's Bazaar and The Wall Street Journal. Yes, she's smart and stylish! She's also a bonafide vintage lover and channels this passion into her line of retro-spirited dresses that are all rendered in vintage (read: eye-grabbing!) Italian textiles. The feminine silhouettes are relaxed and comfortable, perfect for breezing around in warm weather, plus they manage to be both everyday-friendly and big occasion-worthy. My other faves are this kaleidoscope patterned midi dress and this '70s-print off-the-shoulder maxi. You can check out the entire collection here and see JJ in La Double J action here.

the puff sleeve

I'm ready to go big this spring with the puff sleeve--but not too big, lest I want to impersonate an NFL linebacker! This voluminous silhouette feels fresh and edgy after all the bell sleeves of late, and the airiness reflects spring's overall amped-up, oversize movement. I'd like to make a huge statement in these pieces by Rejina Pyo (above), Anna October, Mango, Ulla Johnson, Rosie Assoulin, Frame, Tibi and J.Crew.

spring satchels

I've got my eye on some new investment bags for spring, ones that will work and play hard, punctuate/update my lightweight wardrobe, and lug my life around in style. My favorites include this rope-handled J.W. Anderson bucket bag (above), this chain-strapped Sacai (below), this crochet raffia Prada tote, this minimalist Creatures of Comfort bucket bag and this striped Tomasini satchel. Less of an investment and more of an impulse buy, this Antonio Marras basket tote is not everyday life practical, but is patently cute!

mexico magic

My husband and I escaped to Cabo San Lucas last week for sun and fun--and then some! The extra (and much needed) solar energy sparked our inner explorers, as we canvassed deserted coastline at dusk, searched for whales on the horizon and scoped out off-the-beaten-track restaurants like Acre (pictured above--it's fantastic!). The trip also afforded me the best new dress-bathing suit-and-caftan-wearing escapades! (I'm sporting a just-out La Double J dress, above!) Here are some highlights.

The view from our hotel balcony featured whale spouts, flying mobula rays, and electric sunsets. The lush bougainvillea was eye-popping gorgeous, too.

Another holiday activity: basking in the warm, golden sunlight in my new Tory Burch bikini. It can also be found here.

The ultimate place to read (this) and relax. Beach beds might just be the greatest thing ever invented.

One way to look less touristy: blend in with the scenery! This Rhode Resort dress pulls off the trick nicely. My basket bag is available here.

Swings instead of bar stools? Why not? I'd sidle up to this seaside bar in a margarita-ready dress like this, this, this or this.

My pinstripe and ruffle cotton dress goes from poolside to palapa, no problemo! Other muy bien options from No. 21, Mara Hoffman, Natalie Martin, Fraiche and Tory Burch.

The sunshine-happy stripes, above, are by Rye. I also packed these suits from J.Crew and Luli Fama. Next time I go south of the border, I'd bring along these from Lisa Marie Fernandez, Marysia, Zimmermann and Anjuna.

My Monday morning just got a little sweeter thanks to this Zara discovery: a fringed Chanel-spirited jacket, perfect for layering under winter coats now and on its own this spring. I'd also team it with this, this, this, and this!

caped wonder

This pinktastic faux fur cape helps me forgive bitter Mr. Frost. It actually warms me up quite nicely!

anorak action

I have just one windbreaker in my closet and the only time it sees the light of day is when I go running in the rain--which in LA is almost never (minus the recent Pineapple Express!). But this spring, thanks to designers like Givenchy (pictured below), Sacai and Balenciaga, it seems I have more reasons/occasions to wear this windbreaker or even buy a new one, specifically the about-to-be-trendy kind that doesn't just run in the rain, but gets layered under chic coats and over sophisticated sweaters. The black, wear-with-everything H&M one, above, is a good place to start, but I am also loving these fresh, eye-catching styles from P.E. Nation, Nike, BINGKA, Adidas by Stella McCartney, and Columbia.

in the red

I've literally become attached to my new custom mini cross body bag--thanks to Clare Vivier! I find myself wearing it around the house with my (always misplaced) phone and lip gloss in it. It's super cute and lightweight. Clare has other ones like it, such as this and this. Oh, and my luscious sweater--a cheapie but goodie--can be found here.

cool cats

Despite the scarcity of California sunshine, I'm crushing hard on these Gucci cat eye sunglasses, the current go-to's for the fashionable likes of  designer/model Jeanne Damas, above, model Camille Rowe, below. Stylist Pernille Teisbaek, last pic, favors the smaller retro-chic version. Happy day! A reader just tipped me off that these sunglasses are available here for 75% off! Total score!!
