kate moss x topshop

Kate Moss' first capsule collection for Topshop back in 2007 had me lining up outside Barneys in Beverly Hills, where it was sold, hours before the store opened. I ended up buying two dresses, which I still adore and wear to this day. So it's no surprise her next collab with Topshop, hitting stores today, has me excited. The collection, as you would expect, is innately Kate Moss: bohemian, insouciant, feminine, and slightly rebellious. All of the pieces are inspired by her own clothes, including one-of-a-kind vintage gems. My favorites include this embroidered kaftan (which I'd like to wear lolling around on the beach in Ibiza, a la Moss), this yellow one shoulder chiffon dress (most likely inspired by the frock, pictured above), this beaded flouncy camisole, this satin evening-ready romper, and these sumptuous suede shorts. Things are selling out as I write, so check out the whole collection this minute here.

the denim skirt

This Vogue pic is just one indication that denim pencil skirts are making a huge comeback right now. It makes sense after all: they practically go with everything and go anywhere. The chic, high-waist one, above, by Mother is available here. The Gap just came out with a button-down version, similar to the one pictured, below. Other distinctly good options include this distressed Current/Elliot, completely sold out everywhere but here, and this one by Rag & Bone.

top tees

When I first moved from NYC to LA I was totally anti-t-shirt. They looked trite and un-chic (and very LA) to me. Especially with jeans. Then somehow several years in a handful of tees made their way into my wardrobe, mostly in white and grey, perfectly lived-in-looking yet refined. I'd wear them under blazers, with dressier pants and pencil skirts. To this day, I only have a handful, as I am still picky about fit, fabric, texture and feel--and wear them here and there. However, when I discern a good t-shirt (or five!) in the crowd, I pounce. My latest finds include this scoopneck linen Madewell (in white and black), this lightweight Acne, this jersey Rag & Bone, and this boxy Emerson Fry (pictured above).

proenza topper

Ever since I saw stylist Samantha Traina work this white Proenza Schouler jacket in Paris, I've been lusting for a similar game-changer--one that's both basic and edgy and can, just like that, chicify an outfit. Lucky days as this Proenza piece is now 70% off here.

bonding and sandaling

I'll admit it's a very only-in-LA kind of thing to stage a school mom's retreat at the beach. But, for me, that's exactly what went on last Friday. The premise: to get away, relax and bond. The result: success! Margaritas were on tap. There were enchiladas and kale salad. Both funny chitchatting and deep conversations happened. And there was sandals galore. The best of the bunch: a new J.Crew black leather slide that everyone agreed was excellent in its very right-now-Birkenstock-likeness, but notness. Think: feminine, elegant, sleek and versatile. And bet that many of us will soon own a pair.

throw back Thursday/army jacket edition

I've been thinking I should join the throwback-Thursday thing here on LE CATCH (where you bust out photos from the past). I haven't really had time to go back into my deep archives, but the above pic (from just a year ago) is at least a start. Plus, it's in keeping with today's army jacket theme, since in this case I am sporting one at an art opening with my twin sis, proving that it's both timeless and versatile--i.e. not just for school drop off. More jacket possibilities include this Madewell, this Topshop, this Nili Lotan, and this Harvey Faircloth.

my morning jacket

wide leg trousers

Up in San Francisco yesterday while working on a project (details to come soon!), I decided I needed a pair of wide leg trousers. This conclusion was precipitated by my working side by side with a very chic someone, who was sporting black high waisted 3.1 Phillip Lim wide leg pants from several years ago. They were leg-lengthening, style-enhancing, everything-flattering. They were classic, polished, sophisticated, fresh-looking, and paired with a denim button-down blouse as they were yesterday, pure perfection. So far my (pant)hunt has turned up these guys from Stella McCartney, Theory, Reiss, and Joseph--and I'd love to wear them all!

sexy back

It's rare when the back of an outfit trumps the front, so when it happens it's extra awesome. Lucky for us, backless jumpsuits are proliferating like crazy this summer, affording us the opportunity to be sexy, comfy, and one-step-dressing chic. Some options to consider: this L'Agence, this Haider Ackerman, this MSGM, this Rachel Pally, this 9Seed, and this Friend of Mine. Oh, and you'll definitely be needing these to pull these babies off.

stand out swimsuits

With this summer being all about the statement suit (think graphic prints, cut-outs, mesh, crochet, etc), I was excited to christen my new daring, cut-out Norma Kamali-90s-like one-piece this past weekend up in Santa Barbara. Even though I am far from sun-kissed and not quite in summer-fighting shape, I felt pretty good in it. Since the suit was cute, I felt cute. Or, rather, confident. So, going forward, my swimsuit shopping philosophy is the more striking the suit, the better I'll look--and feel. On my wish list now: the cut-out Kore maillot, above, in figure-flattering black, this ridiculously cute Lisa Maree crochet bikini, this paisley J.Crew convertible bikini (25% off!), and this striped Mikoh two-piece

flipping out

Cuteness alert: Havianas has improved on the basic rubber flip flop with expressly cool sandal-like silhouettes and excellent colors. At 3o bucks a pop, no less. the midi heel

Not too high, not too low, the midi-heel--A.K.A, spring's most desirable shoe--is just right. They're sensible yet sophisticated, the happy medium between a flat sandal and a sky-high stiletto. They will be my go-to's this season, because they give me the 2- to 3-inch leg-lengthening lift I need without the hardship of a high heel. They also go with just about everything from a pair of jeans to a feminine pleated skirt. My favorites include this cool wraparound Alexa Wagner, this classic metallic Manolo Blahnik (I covet the snakeskin version too), this black ankle-strap Joe's Jeans,* this block-heeled Gucci, this buckle-trimmed Steven,* and this scalloped Loeffler Randall

*These shoes are 25% off through Thursday 4/17.

go short

$195, shopbop
I have a friend who's always flawlessly dressed and whenever I see her I  want to run home and change my outfit (and try again). Such was the case when I visited her last summer at her Sag Harbor home and her breezy tunic and eminently cool rope-accented shorts completely outshone my dress.  Now, if I turn up at her house this summer sporting these lovelies, I am certain I will not want to run home and change.

summer staples on sale

Every summer needs a breezy, backless dress like this or (this or this), along with fresh new staples--i.e., a flattering bikini, a flowy blouse, gorgeous sandals. Today would be a good day to stock up on these warm weather essentials (along with year-round basics for that matter) as Shopbop is staging a site-wide 25% off sale through Thursday (use code INTHEFAMILY14). I'm eyeing this sunny little dress by Antik Batik and this ruffly one too, these fierce Aquazurra lace-up sandals, this picnic-ready Clare V. tote bag, this fun fringed Endless Rose mini and this sweet Patterson J. Kincaid floral print romper.

the fun dress

As I danced like crazy with some great friends at an epic birthday bash on Saturday night, I felt in those minutes nothing but pure joy. And all that mattered was the next best song. I love those magical nights, when everything lines up: the company, the music, the setting, and of course, the festive outfit. I busted out a sexy summery Balenciaga dress that I last wore almost a year ago in Napa for an equally fun soiree. It's a dress that, I think, demands a whirl around on the dance floor, and I adore it for that reason. I'm always on the lookout for these dance-worthy dresses as they don't come along that often. And I think perhaps the more I have, the more boogie sessions in my future! Here's what I am currently coveting: this Tamara Mellon, this BB Dakota*, this Lover, this findersKEEPERS*, this T by Alexander Wang*, this Zimmermann, and this Solace London.

shoulder baring

You may recall that my husband dislocated his shoulder a few weeks ago while surfing and,  unfortunately, he will need surgery. And I'll be helping him tie his shoelaces (among other things!) until his arm is healthy again. In the meantime, I'm thinking about putting the spotlight on my own shoulders, thanks to spring's new crop of shoulder-baring dresses and tops. The look is outright sexy, and I love that it can be executed via a festive cocktail dress or an everyday sweater (see last pic) and even in between. Some current off-the-shoulder stunners include this Preen satin-crepe dress (pictured in the third image below), this versatile Blaque Label top, this Tbags blouse, this ruffled Isabel Marant maxi, this dramatic Rosie Assoulin cotton top, this vintage Jean Paul Gaultier dress, and this Mes Demoiselles eyelet blouse.
