My twin sister Coliena showed up to watch the Super Bowl at my house yesterday wearing a new and super cute varsity jacket. She looked suitably sporty and stylish for the occasion, so, of course, I asked for details. It turns out, her inspiration came in two parts. The first was back in November when she was photographing Gwyneth Paltrow for her website Goop, and GP turned up at the shoot in an awesome Louis Vuitton leather varsity jacket. Then a few days ago my sister did a shoot for a British fashion mag with a major London stylist, who not only sported this floral print varsity jacket but also declared that spring would be chock full of these sporty-retro toppers. (In other words, they're about to reach their fever pitch!) This finally prompted Coliena to go out and buy her own sleek version from Zara. Naturally, I want one now too and will be teaming it with more romantic, feminine pieces, such a pencil skirt or anything lace. So far these players by Current/Elliott (30% off), Rag & Bone and Club Monaco are making the cut.

I have been wanting one of these jackets - missed out on the Golden Bear from Jcrew and thought about getting the Jcrew Surf Varsity Jacket intstead- but this one by Zara looks great so went ahead and ordered it. Navy is a great color for us Seattleites!!! :-) Thank you Marlien!!

I was feeling that this look was a bit young for me, given that I have teenagers whose peers wear actual varsity jackets, but the Zara one your sister has is so subtle. I love the navy and black combo and the idea of wearing it with dresses or skirts makes me think I might be able to pull it off without looking like I grabbed it from one of my sons' closets, especially if it's a little bit shrunken. Hmmm - you've got me thinking....

I'm a size 4 but ordered the Zara in a medium (I'm 5'8 and didn't want it to be too short) Do you think these look best when they are semi-loose fitting or more fitted?. I wonder if I should go back and order the small or stick with the medium?

I think they look best semi-loose fitting. That way you can layer up underneath.
